Thelma McMillan Barnett, age 92, was called from labor to reward Friday, April 17, 2026. She was born April 27, 1933, in Dillon, South Carolina and was the daughter of David and Ella Peterkin McMillan Sr. A radiant smile, kind and loving demeanor were some of the attributes that endeared Thelma to friends and family. She enriched our lives and brightened our days. May she soar with the angels and rest in Our Father’s Arms.
Thelma was educated in the Stanly County Public schools and was a proud graduate of the historic West Badin High School, Badin, North Carolina. She was employed as a Matron with the Stanly County Sheriff Department for several years; and a licensed cosmetologist.
At an early age Thelma accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and for many years prior to declining health she was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Badin. There she sang in the Senior Choir and was a dedicated member of the Missionary Board. Never idle, Thelma was a voter’s registration volunteer, notary, and always found time to assist others in the community. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 457, PHA, where she was Past Worthy Matron, former secretary and treasurer of the Stars. In her leisure time, she enjoyed baking her famous Carmel cakes. Most of all, Thelma enjoyed family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them.
Thelma has joined her parents, her beloved husband, Laciel Barnett Jr., siblings: David McMillan Sr., Mac Carson McMillan, Sallie Mae McMillan, Shady Mae Walker, and Alma Nabinett, where there is always beauty and tranquility.
Thelma’s memory will forever be cherished by her daughter, Andra Barnett; son, Kenneth Barnett and her daughter-in-law, Rhonda Barnett; grandchildren: Charde Barnett, Kalia Barnett, Sara (David) Barnett, and Melia (Jake) Barnett-East; great grandchildren: Kenneth Barnett, Mykah Barnett, Kyree Barnett, Amare Harris, and Ada East; sister, Rosetta McMillan; sisters-in-law: Bertha McMillan, Permilla Carthon, and Edna McMillan; a host of other relatives and friends.
