Our Heavenly Father, who is perfect in all action, called Sylvia Delores Owens home to rest from her labor. A beautiful baby daughter was born July 13, 1956 in Mullins, West Virginia. She was the ‘apple of their eye’ to her mother, Margaree O. Daye and grandparents, William and Della Owens, who helped to rear her. Her journey in this life, came to a close Sunday, March 15, 2020 in the suburbs of Windsor Heights, Des Moines, Iowa. Saddened by her death, we are comforted in knowing that Sylvia knew she was dearly loved. She will be missed by the many individuals whose lives she touched.
Sylvia was an excellent student who enjoyed school. She was educated in the Stanly County North Carolina public schools and graduated from North Stanly High School, New London, North Carolina. She furthered her education at North Carolina Central University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. Sylvia completed additional studies at The Iowa Law School. After a stellar career as a case manager with the State of Iowa, Civil Rights Commission, Sylvia retired in December 2019.
She was a dedicated member of Anchor Baptist Church (formerly Grandview Park Baptist Church), Des Moines, Iowa. Never complacent, Sylvia was a popular diva who was a prayer warrior, Godly individual, and great humanitarian who endeavored to make others’ lives better. She was also very friendly, outspoken, adventurous and happy. She found joy in volunteering in her church and community.
Special memories of Sylvia will forever remain in the hearts of her mother, Margaree O. Daye, Durham, North Carolina; uncles: James (Joyce) Owens, Mantua, New Jersey and William (Mary) Owens, New Haven, Connecticut; great aunt, Mary Pergee, New London, North Carolina; many cousins and countless friends.
