Sarah Elizabeth (Powell) Sutton

Brave in spirit, strong in love, our beloved Sarah Powell Sutton, daughter of Berth and Marie Powell was born July 19, 1944, in Stanly County, North Carolina. “Toot”, as she was affectionately known was a woman of faith. Kindness was her trademark. She lived her faith in that if she could help someone along life’s  journey, then her living would not be in vain. She opened her home to family and friends. Always sharing and caring about others. Our “Queen” has gone from our home, but lives in our hearts forever.

Sarah was educated in the Stanly County Public Schools and graduated from the historic West Badin High School, class of 1963, Badin, North Carolina. She furthered her education at Stanly Community College, Albemarle. Never idle, always hardworking, whatever endeavor Sarah undertook, she was successful. She was an amazing artist and designer. Everyone enjoyed being in Sarah’s company because she was fun-loving and kept things lively. “Toot” could out dance the “best of the best” and everybody loved to see her dance. She had a sharp sense of humor and was a natural comedian who kept everyone laughing. She really could turn a rainy day into a sunny day with her comic appeal.

On Friday, April 18, 2025, God saw that Sarah was tired. He called her from labor to reward while a patient at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia. She has joined her parents, Berth and Marie; her husband, Joseph Sutton; her siblings: Joe Powell Sr., Fannie Bennett, and Joe Kirk; brother-in-law, Robert Sutton in a place where the woes of the world are no more.

Loving and cherished memories will be treasured by her children: Comala (Percell) Cellars, the twins, Dolly and Carl Maurice Powell, Everett Pemberton, and Orenthal Joe (Candace) Pemberton; sisters: Cynthia Powell, Mary Moore, Diane Allen, Carol Cole, Jonny Mae Cole, and Velvet Cole; one brother, Sam Cole; sisters-in-law: Shirley Nnaka, Ann Sutton, and Elaine Pray; stepchildren: Barry and Patricia; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.
