Reverend Regeland "Jerry" Smith

Heaven’s Gate opened for Reverend Regeland “Jerry” Smith, Thursday, December 17, 2020, while a patient at Atrium Health-Cabarrus, Concord, North Carolina. He was born December 14, 1941, in Stanly County, North Carolina; and was the son of the late Benjamin and Bertha Harris Smith. Fondly called “Jerry” by his family and friends, he was candid, engaging and quite the conversationalist. “Jerry” was a Servant leader, who has fought the battle, won the victory, kept the faith, and has received his reward, as he rests in the Arms of Our Lord and Savior. His memory will be cherished and will remain lovingly in our hearts.

He was educated in the Stanly County public schools, and graduated from West Badin High School, Badin, North Carolina. He was last employed with Honeycutt Shoe Shop, Albemarle, North Carolina.

“Jerry” was an accomplished orator, singer, pianist, and entrepreneur. He also had a natural talent as a wood craftsman. “Jerry” was always impeccably dressed. He loved fashion, and his fashion savvy, was apparent in his dress and appearance.

A man of Christian faith, “Jerry” who was saved on April 14, 1966 was ordained as a minister under the tutelage of Reverend Stokes of Saint Luke Church, New York, New York. Reverend Smith enjoyed preaching and teaching Jesus’ disciples. He was a long-time member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Badin.

Sweet was the hour ‘‘Jerry” entered God’s Kingdom. There he was welcome to his heavenly home by his parents; siblings: Amelia, Rae, Benjamin, Verlene, Ruth, Evelyn, and Bertha; and his best friend, Roosevelt “Chuck” Horne who died in October of this year. We, believe that when all of them got together last Thursday night, what a time they had welcoming “Jerry” home.

With joy and thanksgiving in our hearts, we will remember “Jerry” with love, admiration, and gratitude for the many years we shared his life. His memory will be treasured by his sons: Robert R. Allen, Albemarle, Regeland L. Smith, Brooklyn, New York, and Duane E. (Denise) Smith, Bronx; daughter, Deneane Smith, Yonkers; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister, Junester Lilly, Manhattan; a host of other relatives and friends.
