Obituary
John 3:16 KJV: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Our hearts grieve the passing of Ophelia Gladys Wilson Sharpe. She transitioned to eternal rest, December 11, 2021. Born March 3, 1930, in Stanly County, North Carolina, Ophelia was the daughter of the late Samuel and Louise Wilson Butler. She was reared by her grandmother, the late Lillie Davis Wilson.
At an early age she surrendered to Christ at Cedar Grove AME Zion Church, New London, North Carolina and was a lifelong member. She was a devoted Missionary, Sunday School member, and finance officer. She was also the Church Mother for many years. She also held positions in Concord District within Christian Education and Missionary Department.
Ophelia attended West Badin High School, Badin, North Carolina and completed her bachelor's degree from Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville, North Carolina.
She would later return to her alma mater, West Badin High School, as a substitute teacher. Her career as an educator advanced to South Oakboro Schools and Sam Vick Elementary School, Wilson, North Carolina. She retired from South Stanly High School after 33 years of dedicated service.
Involved and service orientated, Ophelia was a member of the following organizations: NACE, NAACP, Savings and Thrift Club, Book Club, Stanly County Hospice and Meals on Wheels volunteer.
In addition to her parents and grandmother, she was preceded in death by her sister, Martha Pegues; and cousins, who she reared: Brenda C. Hines and Margie Covington.
Left to mourn her memory are her son, Kenneth M. Jeffries, Badin, North Carolina; nephew, who was reared like a son, Henderson Pegues Jr., Albemarle, North Carolina; granddaughter, Nakisha (Michael) Davis; grandsons: Leonard Fleming, Matthew Jeffries, and Caleb Jeffries; great granddaughter, Nyasia Davis; great grandson, Michael Davis Jr.; niece, Sarah (Vincent) Ruff; nephew, Johnathan (Chrissy) Pegues; great nieces: Tiera Richardson, Jasmine Richardson and Ashley Pegues; great nephews: Cordaren Richardson, Tommy Richardson III, and Jameson Pegues; brother-in-law, Henderson Pegues Sr.; aunt, Lula Bell Wilson; cousins reared by Ophelia: Valarie Walker and Margaret Lindsey; special friends, Helen Pankey, Alberta Spencer and Eula Lewis; a host of other relatives and friends.
