Mildred Hughes Obituary

In God’s Care, Mildred Jones Hughes, age 76, entered eternal rest, Sunday, April 11, 2021 at her residence in Albemarle, North Carolina. Mildred was born July 25, 1944 in Stanly County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Doris Bradley and was reared by the late Tom and Lillian Ingram. Although Mildred did not have biological children, she was a special, loving, and generous aunt to her nieces, great nieces, and nephews. May heaven’s eternal joy be thine. She will be remembered with love and affection.

Mildred attended the Stanly County public schools and graduated from West Badin High School, class of 1962, Badin, North Carolina. She moved to New Brunswick, New Jersey shortly after high school and began her nursing career. She was employed with the Veterans Hospital, Scotch Plains, New Jersey until her retirement in March 1997.

She was an inspiration to many of us and had an abiding faith. Mildred was a member of McDonald Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Badin.  There she a member of the Missionary Board where she enjoyed visiting the sick and helping others. She always believed in treating others with dignity and respect.

Never idle, Mildred was involved and was a secretary of the Nurses Unit Association of New Jersey, Inc., member of the Sunbeam Temple # 164, IBPOE, and Counselor of the Vashat Court #39, Order of Calanthe.

In 1987, Mildred met and later married her best friend and soul mate, Marion James Hughes. They were happily married until he passed. In addition to her mother, she was also preceded in death by her God parents, Houston and Beatrice Owens, and her sister, Patsy Rivers.

Mildred’s love and legacy will forever be remembered by her nieces: Yvonne Vestal, Conyers, Georgia, Shelia (Jeffrey) Hemingway, Sicklerville, New Jersey, Khadiya (Timmy) Henry, Greenville, South Carolina and Lutherine Miller, Summerville, New Jersey; great nieces and nephew: Candace Vestal, Zionnah Henry, Hezekiah Henry and Nuhriah Henry; uncle, Lester (Rachel) Mc Lendon, Albemarle, North Carolina; best friend/little sister, Siesta Rushing, Albemarle; a host of great nieces, great nephews from Summerville, Somerset and Bridgewater, New Jersey; other relatives and friends.
