Imogene Snuggs Obituary

Imogene Sophia Snuggs, age 83, of Albemarle, North Carolina passed gently and peacefully into the arms of her Divine Savior, Monday, January 20, 2025. She was born November 20, 1941, and was the eldest daughter of Doremus David and Aleane Ponds Snuggs. Because of her parents’ love and compassion for education, they taught Imogene academics at home until the age of four; and enrolled her in first grade at Kingville School,  Albemarle.

Imogene earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Winston Salem Teacher’s College,  Winston-Salem, North Carolina at the age of nineteen. While at the university, she made Dean’s list and graduated with honors. She was inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and was a member of the university choir. Furthering her academic excellence, Imogene earned a Master of Science degree from North Carolina A & T State University, Greensboro, North Carolina. Imogene was an excellent educator who enjoyed a  37-year teaching career at Highland Elementary and the Mount Gilead Schools in Montgomery County, North Carolina. After her retirement, she remained a member of the North Carolina Retired Teachers Association.

A woman of faith, generous spirit, and  a loving demeanor, Imogene was life-long member of Union Chapel A.M.E. Zion  Church, Albemarle. At Union Chapel she served as pianist, class leader, Bible school teacher, president of the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society, Lay Council member, and church conference delegate for many years.

Imogene maintained her passion for helping others. She tutored after-school students at the Woodside Academy and volunteered with Meals on Wheels for 13 years. She was a caregiver to family and friends who needed her assistance. In her leisure time, Imogene enjoyed being outside enjoying  God’s nature as she loved gardening , traveling, and spending time with family at the beach on their yearly family vacations. Never idle, she found time to read, listen to music, and play the piano.

She was preceded in death by her parents Doremus David “DD” and Aleane; three  brothers: Doremus David Snuggs Jr., Patrick Charles Keith Snuggs, Victor Xavier Snuggs and  sister, Gail Snuggs Swaringen.

Imogene loved her brothers and sisters, stepchildren, nieces and nephews and reveled in their company and accomplishments.

Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Ivey Cytrena Snuggs; sister-in-law, Trudella Snuggs; stepchildren: Teresa Thomas, Navonya T. Jones, and Napolean Thomas Jr.; nephews: Samuel Swaringen (Candie), Charles “Chuck” Swaringen, Carl Cain (Crystal), Christopher Cain (Ashley), and D.
