Obituary
In sweet peace, our beloved, Hurley Russell Smith Sr., transitioned to eternal rest Sunday, October 8, 2023, while a patient at Atrium Health, Charlotte, North Carolina. Hurley was born December 23, 1947 in Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina to the parentage of John and Mary Mageline Bost Smith. Humble, kind, generous, and loving embodied Hurley's persona. Gone from our home, but never from our hearts, we are comforted in knowing that Hurley is resting in the Arms of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Educated in the Stanly County public schools, Hurley was a 1967 graduate of North Stanly High School , New London, North Carolina. After graduation he enlisted and honorably served in the United States Army. He served two tours in the Vietnam War.
Hurley retired from Sun Chemical Company in Charlotte, North Carolina after many years of dedicated service as a chemical ink processor.
A man of faith, Hurley was a member of Temple Of Praise (Church Of God Of Prophecy) in Rock Hill South Carolina, Bishop Alfred E. Long, Pastor. There he enjoyed Manutius spirited service and served as the Church Treasurer.
In his leisure, Hurley enjoyed riding his bike and performing small engine repairs. He also enjoyed gardening. Family celebrations and spending time with his grandchildren were a great source of enjoyment.
He was married to the late Gladys McDonald Smith who preceded him in death. His parents and siblings: Frances Allen, Beulah "Louise" Brooks, Melvin Smith, Oliver Smith and Carrie Grady preceded him in death.
Hurley will be remembered and cherished by his sons: Rev. Dr. Hurley R. (Chanita) Smith Jr , Gastonia, NC and Cedric Smith of the home; daughter, Justana Smith (Marques Isabell), Gastonia, NC; grandsons: Joshua, Josiah, Z'Mar, Z'Montae and Stephon; granddaughters: Shakiya, Tamara, Zaryiell and Taneara; great granddaughter Kynnedi Cymone; brothers: John H. Smith and Walter S. Smith; twin sister: Shirley Morgan; sisters: Mildred (Leon) Brown, Georgia Haywood, Verious Hinson; a very special friend Mrs. Doris McCoy and a host of of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
