Mrs. Grace Bell Kendall Pegues, age 103, transitioned to be with Our Lord and Savior, Monday, August 28, 2023, at her residence in Norwood, North Carolina. Born December 4, 1919, in Stanly County, North Carolina, Grace was the daughter of the late Willie and Maude Horne Kendall. The name "Grace" epitomized Grace because she was a woman of grace and dignity. Always loving and caring, Grace was a friend and gave generously to her neighbors, friends, and the neighborhood children. She loved her family unconditionally, encouraged and instilled in them a fervent desire for education. Grace was a great storyteller. We enjoyed spending time with her and hearing about our family and days of olden time. We give thanks for the many years we shared her life.
Grace was educated in the Stanly County public schools and was retired after many years of employment with Almond Brothers Poultry, Albemarle, North Carolina. She often remarked that her greatest profession was homemaker. Her husband and children were important, and she always ensured that they were cared for properly. She loved sewing, gardening, and fishing. Her greatest talent was cooking and baking her specialty, "the brown sugar cake".
A woman of faith, Grace was a former member of Cottonville AME Zion Church, Norwood. Many years ago, she loved attending the local campground church meetings. She was also a choir member with East Macedonia Baptist Church, Norwood. Later in life she joined the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Albemarle, where she was a Deaconness.
Never idle, Grace was adventurous. She loved traveling and visited the Holy Land twice. She volunteered at the Norwood Clothing Closet for many years and volunteered with local churches during revivals and vacation Bible school.
Grace was united in holy matrimony to Nelson Pegues who preceded her in death. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Margaret; siblings: Hugh, Clyde, Virginia, Roxie, Helen, and Eunice.
Those who will forever love and cherish Grace's memory are her son, Henderson Pegues Sr.; daughters: Doretha Baldwin and Grayce Storey; sisters: Girleva Hartwell and Bessie Smith; brother, Willie Kendall Jr.; a host of grandchildren; great and great great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives, and friends.
"Good night, dear Grace, may flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest."
