Deacon Mack Sam Bruton

In sweet peace, Mack Sam Bruton, age 90, transitioned to his Heavenly home Friday, June 26, 2020.  Mack, fondly known by his friends as, “The Mayor of Gibson Street”, was born September 13, 1929 in Stanly County, North Carolina; and was the son of the late Frank and Lillie Mae Lilly Bruton. Deacon Bruton was a dignified gentleman that was self-confident, wise, and well-informed.  He had a kind, loving heart.  He personified the qualities of the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  He was the first to say, “ I am not a perfect man, but through the years my faith in God and my study of the good book- The Bible-has never wavered”.  His legacy is simply that he always tried to lend a helping hand to his fellowman.

Educated in the Stanly County public schools, Mack graduated in 1948 from Kingville High School, Albemarle, North Carolina.  After graduation, he moved to New York.  He was employed with General Dynamics, Bayonne, New Jersey until his retirement.  Mack and his family returned to North Carolina in 1979.  For many years he was employed with Kelsey Funeral Home, Albemarle until his death declined.

Deacon Bruton was a “Man of God” who was committed, active and faithful to his church.  In Brooklyn he was a member of Fountain Disciple Church of Christ.  At Fountain Disciple he was Chairman of the Deacon Board, Trustee Board member and member of the Gospel Choir.  At his passing he was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, New London, North Carolina where he was a member of the choir.  He was a former board member of the Correctional Resource Council (CRC) Albemarle, North Carolina.  Deacon Bruton loved family and friends. He enjoyed many family gatherings.  In 2019, a 90th Birthday Celebration was enjoyed by  his family and friends honoring the man-Deacon Mack Sam Bruton.  He had an astute financial savvy and was the community’s financial advisor. He was also a mentor to young men and a friend to many.

He was married to the love of his life, Flora Mae Freeman, who preceded him in death in 1980.  In addition to his wife and parents, his children: Patricia A. Bruton, Sylvia M. Bruton and Charlie F. Bruton; siblings: Catherine Clark, Mallard Bruton and Frank Bruton welcomed him to a place where every day is like Sunday and a place that is perfect in every way.

A legacy of love, devotion and fond memories will remain in the hearts of his daughters: Brenda (Eddie) Brown, New London, North Carolina, Macqueline (Edward) Paulley, Brooklyn, New York, Sharean (Willie) Williams, New London, North Carolina and Dina Bruton, Albemarle, North Carolina; sons: Glen Bruton, Albemarle, North Carolina and Jared Bruton, Fort Dix, New Jersey; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-four great grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jacqueline (Joe) Watkins, Albemarle, North Carolina; a host of other relatives and countless friends.
