Surrounded by her loving family, Our Lord and Savior called his daughter, Bermell Covington Harris affectionately known as "Granny", to Eternal rest on Sunday, December 13, 2020. She was born July 22, 1930 in Montgomery County, North Carolina; and was the daughter of the late Robert Franklin and Lilly Ewing Covington. She was the last survivor of her immediate family. Her siblings: Margarete, Maude, Ruth, Rosa, Larine, Wilmer, Robert Franklin Jr., and Cornell welcomed her home. Gone, but never will be forgotten, we give thanks for the many years and memories we shared with our dear mother.
Bermell was educated in the Montgomery County public schools, and graduated from the historic Peabody High School, Troy, North Carolina. She attended A & T State University, Greensboro, North Carolina and pursued a nursing degree. Bermell was employed with Troy Drapery, Troy, before retiring after many years of service.
A believer, and a servant of God, Bermell ministered to the flock most of her life. At an early age she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined St. Stephens United Church of God, Troy. She later united with Rose of Sharon Apostolic Church of God in Christ, Troy. After relocating to Stanly County, North Carolina, she became a member of Corner Church of the Lord Jesus Christ Apostolic Church, Albemarle, North Carolina, where her daughter is Bishop of the church. At Corner Church, Bermell was ‘Church Mother’, Elder of the Church and Noon Day Prayer Leader for many years.
In her leisure, she enjoyed fishing and fished almost daily until her health declined. She also enjoyed solving jig saw puzzles. Her greatest joy was spending time with family, especially her grands, and great grands.
Bermell was married to Walter Harris, who preceded her in death.
A beautiful soul with a loving spirit is no longer with us. She is now soaring with the Angels. She will forever be remembered and loved by her daughters: Bishop Clarissa (JM) Young and Minister Teresa (Elder Michael) Rushing, both of Albemarle; sons: Walter Franklin Harris, Greensboro, and Kenneth W. (Patricia) Harris, New London, North Carolina; fourteen grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; a host of other relatives, church members and friends.
