Agnes Evelyn Maske

Agnes Evelyn Maske was born August 24, 1940, to the late Samuel George McCoy Sr. and the late Lucretia Allen McCoy.  She transitioned to be with Our Lord in Glory on Thursday, June 18, 2020, at the age of 79.

Agnes was a caring and sharing person who was affectionately known as “MaMa Maske” to many. 

Agnes was educated in the Durham Public School system graduating from Hillside High School in 1957.  She valued the importance of education, which was demonstrated by her many achievements.  In 1963, she received her Bachelor of Business Education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where she was a majorette in the marching band and lead vocalist for the Aggie Jazz and Blues Band.  NC A&T was the beginning of her lifelong fight for Civil Rights as she was a dedicated member of the 1959 Civil Rights Movement in Greensboro, NC.   Agnes continued her studies and earned a Masters Degree in Education from the University of North Carolina Charlotte in 1976. 

 In 1963 Agnes married the love of her life, Johnny Laron Maske.  To this union, four children were born, Katrina, LaRon, Leah, and Kimberly.  Agnes and Johnny were admired for their loving and affectionate marriage. They supported each other in every aspect of their lives.  They loved gardening, traveling, and supporting the Aggies, only missing one Homecoming since graduating from NC A&T. She was Johnny’s "Girl," and Johnny was her "Baby". 

Agnes began her educational career in 1963 at West Badin High School.  She continued her love for teaching at Kingville High School (1963-1967), Albemarle Junior High School (1967-1969), and Albemarle High School (1969-1997).  After retirement in 1999, her love for "her children" guided her back to the classroom accepting the Principalship at Stanly County Outreach Charter School in Albemarle, NC, where she was known for greeting each child every day with a hug and a smile.  In 2001, Agnes served as a member of the Stanly Community College Board of Trustees. 

Agnes believed it was important that her family knew their history.  With the help of her cousins James McCoy and Louise Shipmen, she was able to keep her family educated about their heritage. She was instrumental in organizing annual McCoy – McKoy family reunions that are held around the country.   

Love for her community and church was essential, and one of her greatest desires.  Agnes joined First Baptist Badin in 1963, where she dedicated her gifts and love for Christ.  Her passion for Christ and children guided her through many church affiliations. She was Director of Junior Missionaries, Director of the Your Choir, Former Pastor Aid President, Member of the Spiritual Choir, Financial /Recording Secretary, Adult Sunday School Teacher, and President of the Community Holy Week Choir.  Agnes was the Past President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Salisbury Alumnae Charter and a current member of the Knightdale-Wake Forest Alumnae Chapter. 

The "Coaching Legacy” began at Kingville High, where Agnes coached the girls’ basketball team. She later began coaching Track and Field at Albemarle Senior High in 1981.  Through her leadership, she couched the girl's outdoor track and field teams to two consecutive 1A /2A State Championships at Chapel Hill in 1986 and 1987.  Her women's cross-country team were Regional Champions in 1993 and Regional Runner-up in 1994.  She was voted Coach of the Year in the Rocky River Conference for nine consecutive years.  She was awarded the Female Coach of the Year Award for Region Six in 1989 and received the Female Coach of the Year Award for the State of North Carolina in 1994. Due to all her accomplishments and dedication to her community, Agnes was awarded the Key to the City of Albemarle.

Agnes became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Morning Star Chapter #570 of Badin in 1975. She was elected Worthy Matron and served in that position for three years. As Worthy Matron, she was active in the 16th District Administrative Council. When it was proclaimed in the Grand Chapter to administer the Amaranth Degree on the District Level, Agnes was appointed to serve as the first Royal Matron of the 16th District.  In 1990, Grand Worthy Matron Marian Covington appointed her to the Grand Associated District Deputy to assist Grand District Deputy Leomi Powe in servicing the Chapters of the 16th District. Faithfully performing her duties, she was designated to serve the Chapters in Anson, Stanly, and Montgomery Counties. Agnes demitted to Badin Chapter #457, where her husband Johnny was a member of the sponsoring Lodge. During the fiscal year of 1993-94, the District lines of the Order of the Eastern Star were redefined to become aligned with the Masonic Lodges. The 16th District was divided into two new Districts 34 and 35. Mrs. Maske was appointed to serve as the first Grand District Deputy of the 34th District and assigned 9 Chapters. She organized the 34th District Administrative Council. Her personal goals were to increase the membership, foster leadership and accountability, stimulate a desire to learn the work of the Order, and to promote District Unity.

Agnes continued to serve as Deputy until she relocated to Wake Forest in 2004. However, her work as a member did not stop. She demitted to Ivey Chapter #126 of Albemarle and continued to be very supportive.  On the Grand level, she became a member of the Past Deputies Council and also volunteered with the Senior Delights.

Agnes Maske was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Lucretia McCoy; her brothers: Samuel McCoy Jr. and Coolidge McCoy.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory, her husband of 57 years, Johnny L. Maske; four children: Katrina (Stevie) Roseboro, LaRon Maske, Leah (Kelvin) Neptune, and Kimberly Maske; three grandchildren: Allison, Aliyah, and Kelvin Jr.; one great-grandson, Sebastian; three sisters: Mabel Landis, Janice Miller, and Vivian McCoy;  special  godchildren Charlie Belle Christian and  Nathaniel Hill; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
