Harry Washington Obituary

The dance floor will now be a little less lively following the peaceful passing of Harry Bones Washington, who exited his earthly body and laced up his dancing shoes in the presence of the Lord on the night of November 16,2019. Born November 12, 1941 in Georgetown, South Carolina, Harry was the son of the late Harris and Louise McCants Washington. We celebrate our beloved’s life and give thanksgiving to Our Creator for a life well-lived; and for allowing us the opportunity to share his life for so many years.

He was educated in the Georgetown County public schools and graduated from Choppee High School, Georgetown.  Harry served honorably in the United States Army.  He was employed with Freightliner Truck Manufacturing in Cleveland, North Carolina, and retired after many years of dedicated service.  Known for his “world famous” sweet potato pies, Harry would’ve happily given you an entire pie for the road!  Handy around the house and under the hood, he would’ve asked how your car was running, after telling you how nice it looked.  Harry dressed “sharp as a tack,” but moved with humility. He would’ve used his old school camcorder to capture his family coming together in love and mourning, while reluctantly stepping in front of the lens to have a photo of his well-coordinated outfit taken. Harry enjoyed watching action movies of which James Bond 007 movies were amongst his favorite. He would’ve asked if you had seen the latest, and invited you to make yourself comfortable and watch alongside him. And he would’ve said it all in his gentle, soft-spoken Georgetown South Cackalacky dialect.  So in honor of Harry, take a moment to check in with yourself and with your neighbor. He would’ve liked that.

Harry exited this world empty, having given all of his time, his talents and his energy ‘til his Good Work here was done. He joins other family members: his parents and brother, Senior Sergeant Frank Washington, in a place where there is perfect peace.

He and Elizabeth R. Hinson Washington were married fifty-six years and were the proud parents of a daughter, Sheila.

While we mourn his passing, we celebrate his life, legacy and love that will live on forever through his wife, Elizabeth H. Washington, New London, North Carolina; daughter, Shelia Washington, Durham, North Carolina; grandchildren: Quincey (Minnie Nicole) Washington, Tiffany Washington, Trey (Kellie) Washington and Phillip Goode (Erica) Washington; six great grandchildren; brother, William Wesley Washington, New London; sisters: Dorothy Washington Peterson, Patricia Washington Watts, both of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Lillian Washington Pyatt, Plantersville, South Carolina; sisters-in-law: Donna Cabell-Washington and Doris Lilly; brothers-in-law: Macy Hinson, Alfred Hinson and Anthony Hinson; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. And now as we say farewell to our beloved, he will be remembered as one who fought the fight, finished his course and now wears a crown. Until next time, we love you!
