Roy Lee Thomas

October 28, 1927 ~ August 20, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old


“A charge to keep I have, A God to glorify, who gave His son my soul to save, And fit it for the sky”, And thus saith the Lord our dear Roy Lee Thomas was called to his Eternal home Sunday morning, August 20,2017 while a patient at Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, North Carolina. We give thanksgiving to our Lord Savior for allowing us to share his life for so many years.

Born October 28, 1927 in Stanly County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late William and Willie Bell Staton Thomas. He was educated in the Stanly County public schools and graduated from Kingville High School, Albemarle, North Carolina. After serving his country in the United States Army, Roy began a career with Alcoa Badin Works, Badin, North Carolina. He was a member of Alcoa’s prestigious Twenty-Five Year Club.

Deacon Thomas was a life-long member of Saint Matthews United Church of God, Oakboro, North Carolina and there he was a former member and chairman of the Deacon Board and a Sunday School teacher. He was Past Master and charter member of Oakboro Lodge #817, PHA; and former member of Royal Arch Chapter #52, Wadesboro, North Carolina.

He and Helen Griffin Thomas were joined in Holy Matrimony for 68 years and they were parents of four children. In addition to his parents three children: Willie Thomas, Leonard Thomas and Rosalyn T. Burns and siblings: Roger Thomas, Elvia Segers and Hazel T. Willoughby preceded him in death.

Those who survive and will forever cherish his memory are: his wife, Helen G. Thomas, Oakboro, North Carolina; one son, Donnie Thomas, Oakboro, North Carolina; five grandchildren: Ameshia (Charles) Smith, and Mario Thomas both of Oakboro, North Carolina, Kia (Norman) Warren, Albemarle, North Carolina, Lashunda (Tremaine) Hamilton, Oakboro, North Carolina and Brad Jackson, Albemarle, North Carolina; twenty-one great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; one aunt, Cora Staton, Oakboro, North Carolina; two sisters-in-law: Mazell Broadway, Oakboro, North Carolina and Cora Thomas, Atlanta, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives  and friends.
