God’s Humble Servant. Father. Son. Grandson. Football Coach. Friend. He was loved, and his life will be remembered as one of faith, family, fellowship and friends.
Quanterius Derryl Watkins, Sr., lovingly known as “Derryl” was born February 24,1987, in Stanly County, North Carolina. He was the son and “joy” of his parents, LaSonja D. Watkins and Garrison Lee. Tuesday, February 27, 2018, Derryl was called to his Heavenly home to live Eternally with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Derryl had a quiet demeanor and a smile that could light up a room and melt the hearts of others in his presence. Though his life on earth was short, he touched the lives of hundreds, especially the youth, as he gave unselfishly of his time to his church, his family and the community. We are truly blessed to have shared his life and we know in our hearts that we will meet again.
Educated in the Stanly County public schools, Derryl graduated from Albemarle Senior High School-Class of 2006. He attended Livingstone College, Salisbury, North Carolina where he pursued a degree in Sports Medicine. He was employed with Corning Incorporated, Midland, North Carolina.
Derryl’s spiritual foundation was as a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Badin, North Carolina. There he sang in the church choir and served as the Pastor’s Armor-Bearer. In his leisure, he dearly loved coaching the Youth League football team, bike riding and four wheeling. He was a great dancer and was known for a dance called ‘Pop-locking’. Derryl was also a great student of mathematics. His other passion was being an involved, loving father to his children and the community’s children. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a member of Stanly Lodge #88, PHA.
His paternal grandparents, James and Lilly Lee, preceded him in death. He has joined others of faith in a place we are told is perfect in every way.
Derryl’s memory will forever be cherished by his family and friends who loved and adored him. Survivors are: his children: Tayln Shaver, Norwood, North Carolina, Aubrey Watkins, Quanterius D. Watkins, Jr. and Jalen Watkins, all of Albemarle; mother, LaSonja D. Watkins, Albemarle; father and step-mother, Garrison and Christine Lee, Albemarle; sisters: Sharika Watkins, Albemarle and Angela Lee, Salisbury; brothers: Maurice Watkins (Chicaraw R.), Bobby Lee, Marikus Watkins, Lee Goode, all of Albemarle and Frederick Lee, Badin; maternal grandparents, Janie and Matthew Watkins, Jr., Albemarle; special friend, Madonna Rivers and children, Garrie Rivers, Vhonii Watkins, Anita Marshall, all of Albemarle; godchildren: Makenzie Early and Satia Johnson; best friends: Boyce Brown, Christopher Ridenhour, Mario Simmon, Douglas Murray, Christopher Edwards, Jr. and Neal Stokes, all of Albemarle; four nieces; four nephews; five great-nieces; five great-nephews; a host of other family members and countless friends.
